I have to agree with those who find the Gouffre de Padirac a waste. There are cave paintings at Rouffignac and St-Cirq, as I've noted, and many other worthy sites. If you take the time to go to Pech-Merle and back you are essentially losing an entire day of your very short trip to the Dordogne. I have visited Font-de-Gaume at least half a dozen times and never fail to be amazed. Discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenage boys, who followed their dog into a narrow entrance. You would be better off getting in line for Font-de-Gaume by about 8-8:30 am and hoping to get in on the daily tour. A short drive from Sarlat, we visit the site of the caves of Lascaux. If you have only 3 days in the Périgord, I would not go off to Pech (not Peche)-Merle, even though it is a great cave.
All of these sites require some basic level of fitness (steep hills, stairs, and so forth). There are countless interesting prehistoric sites in the Périgord that are not caves: Grotte du Grand Roc, Abri Patois, Cap Blanc, Gouffre de Proumeyssac, Villge Troglodytique de la Madeleine.and a couple of amazing sites that range from prehistoric up to medieval times: La Roque St-Christophe, La Maison Forte de Reignac, and the Chateau de Commarque, e.g. You'll have to be at least minimally fit even for these caves, though. Why trust us We scoured through the internet and read through 2 reputable sites and blogs like Belle France and Everything Dordogne. Christophe, and Lascaux II and more, get ready to experience the best places in Sarlat-la-Caneda. They have done an amazing job and the tours are excellent. With favorites like Rouffignac Cave, La Roque St. Lascaux II or IV is probably your best bet if you're not fit and if you don't mind reproductions. The Grotte du Sorcier in St-Cirq is small but well regarded by scientists for its rare depiction of a human form, among paintings of many animals and a few engravings. Bara-Baha is similar, but no cave paintings and no train. Rouffignac has a petit train that takes you down into its bowels, where there are engravings, the remains of bears' "nests," and a few paintings. It's a strenuous hike up the hill to get to the opening.
#Caves near sarlat crack
The best by far is Font-de-Gaume, but only 80 people are allowed in per day (maybe fewer in 2019 I haven't checked this year - you can google it), so you have to get up at the crack of dawn, go and stand in line for an assigned number, then wait to be called for the one daily tour that starts at 9:30 (and will almost certainly be only in French). Most of the important caves are closed to the public now or have extremely limited visiting options.
